SCH 3U AND SCH4U - Blog 3

As discussed in this course, the structure of a given atom, chemical or molecule determines its function. Give an example in your everyday life where the structure of something determines its function. This does not have to be related to chemistry.

Ex. A key fits perfectly into a lock.

  1. I think straw is a of the example. It is plastic that does not allow liquid pass through its surface, so the liquid can pass through from one end to the other side inside the straw.

  2. we all know the carbon.coal.graphite and diamond are carbon.but they have different structure.diamond make up a group of sphercial allotropes of carbon,so it is tough.

  3. The heart is a good example. The function of the heart is as pump blood from the heart to lung and then back to the heart. The structure of the heart is that the valves squeeze the blood in and out the heart.

  4. As we all konw, the colander is full of holes.So it is always uesd for rinsing vegetables,salad,etc. And it aslo can be uesd for pouring hot water from a pasta pot.

  5. The Bamboo charcoal can make the air clean, or make the water clean. Because the bamboo charcoal have lots of small gap, it have adsorption,it can catch up the small grain in order to purify the water or air . It depends it's structure.

  6. Both Diamond and Graphite are consist of carbon. but they have different structures and diamond is much more hard than graphite, so it can be used to cut glass.

  7. I think a catapult is a example that it's a old weapon structure design to attack enemy, since they use rope to hold the rocks and uses the human strength to swing the rope in order to attack enemy throwing rocks out
